As shelters clean out due to increased pet adoptions during the coronavirus outbreak, dogs of all breeds have found forever homes.
Labrador retrievers have won the US breed popularity award for 29 years running.
This week, the American Kennel Club (AKC) announced its 2019 register list, marking a record-breaking popularity run for the breed.
Labs have topped the list since the 1970s, according to the AKC.
The AKC listed “versatility, stable temperament, friendliness, trainability and athleticism as just a few of its special qualities” as making them popular pets.“
“This is a do-everything breed that needs to be with its humans,” Villa Ridge, Missouri Labrador breeder Erin Henlon-Hall told the AKC.
It exemplifies versatility—hunting, showing, family, dock diving, tracking, obedience.“It’s American as baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie.”
Labradors are popular in some cities, but the AKC says the French bulldog, which has been fourth for three years,
is the most popular breed in Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Palm Beach, Florida.
Following the Labrador retriever, the AKC top five contains German shepherds, golden retrievers, French bulldogs, and bulldogs.
